How to Build A Rabbit Pen

This post is going to have a bit of a smaller niche. If you are a rabbit owner, or are becoming a rabbit owner, this is for you.

If you’ve read some of my other posts, you know I have a rabbit, who I spoil the heck out of. He has a big pen, lots of food and treats, and plenty of toys. The hardest part for me to figure out was his pen. A lot of people who have never owned a bunny might think a large enclosed cage is enough for a rabbit. That is very wrong. It might be enough for them to sleep in, but not to live in.

I didn’t know this when I first got him, but acted immediately when I figured it out. I was trying to figure out how to make him a pen big enough for him to run around in, since I don’t have much time to let him out.

If you also have this problem, here are three ways to make easy rabbit pens in a cheap way, slightly expensive way, and a bit more expensive way.

The Cheap Way:

What a lot of people make their cages out of are metal square grids linked together. These can be easily found on amazon, or you can use my link here. Depending on the size of the pen you want and how high you want it to be, you should consider getting a second pack if you want a big pen.

Depending on the type of floor you have, you can either keep your floor bare or get a piece of plywood cut to the size you want the cage to be. Home Depot or Lowes is a convenient way to get the plywood, unless you know a different place to get wood. If your rabbit has a bad habit of chewing and you have carpet, I suggest using the wood.

Now you can keep the pen at just the sides, you will want higher walls if your bunny jumps out a lot and you don’t want him to, or you can add pedestals for your bun to sit on. Not only is this a good idea, so your bun can get more exercise, but you can make you pen a little smaller because it will be going up rather than out. If you are going to make a pedestal using the grids, make sure you have something solid so the bun’s feet don’t get stuck or hurt. Otherwise, you can use a plastic shelf or a wooden plank to attach.

You can shape your pen the way you want and add what you would like, accessory-wise. Here are some examples of a grid pen.

The Slightly Expensive Way:

The only change I have with this one it the type of walls you use. I still highly suggest using a wooden floor if you have a carpet.

This is the method I currently use for my bun and I plan to upgrade to the expensive soon, but this is great for a fast and easy set up. There are two types of walls you can use. The first is the one I use and I highly recommend it, if you don’t mind bending over. It’s plastic panels that link together and the panels end up so close your bun can’t get his teeth on the bar. The pen I used is in the link right here. They are really easy to set up, the only con of using these is there is no door so you either have to lean over or take one of the panels out, but it’s not that big on a deal. And they are high enough for the bun to not jump over.

The second kind of wall you could use is a large dog pen, yeah that easy. Get on that can be used to keep a dog outside and may even have a door. A lot of them have doors near the top so your bun can jump out when you let him and you can step in easily to clean it. Here is a link to one of the cheaper ones I’ve found on Amazon. You can shape it how you want, it’s tall enough, and it has a door.

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=dailydose13-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B00MU2F7SG&asins=B00MU2F7SG&linkId=407facb567538694379353baf4069bf4&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff

The Expensive Way:

Now this is the one I plan on doing for my bun. This requires a bit of manual labor and it definitely the most expensive of the three. There are more extravagant ways to make this pen but this is a simple way to do it. This one requires wooden walls. For this you will need a plywood floor to nail to your walls. Figure out how big you want the pen and measure your wall and floor accordingly. Remember to make your floor slightly bigger than how big you want the pen so you can nail the walls to the floor.

With this method, you make your own door. You can either cut a part of your wall and put hinges on it, or you can make one of the walls a little smaller and use the metal girds to make a door. The second way is a little better for buns who like being able to see the world around them.

If you aren’t sure what kind of wood to get, go to your local hardware store and make sure they have plywood that is at least a ½ to ¾ inches. This will give enough room for the nails and it makes for sturdier walls. I also suggest making pedestals for the type of pen using extra plywood, but that it up to you.

Each of these methods are really simple and makes life easier on your bun so they don’t feel cramped. You can accessorize your pen how you want. Get a bigger litter box, a metal basket to hold your hay, the one linked can be used for either the grid pen or the wooden one. Get a gallon water jug bowl so you’re not constantly changing it (plus the slurping sounds are super cute).

Crayon Pendant Necklace

One of the things I love to make is weird jewelry. This is definitely something people might view as weird. But they are easy and cheap to make and can be great for kids, as well. They are crayon pendant necklaces. They look like little marbled pendants of whatever colors you want.

What you’ll need:

Box of crayons

Medal pendant

Chain of your choice

Hair dryer

Knife or grater

Top Coat

Instructions:

  1. Pick the colors you want to use, I suggest using up to three.
  2. Shave pieces of the crayons with either the knife or the grater. Depending on the size of your pendant, you can have a small amount or a large amount of shaving. You don’t want too many though because they will over flow.
  3. I suggest heating the pendant before placing the shavings on it to keep them in place. The blowing of the hair dryer will blow them around.
  4. Place the shavings how you would like and heat them with the hair dryer on low.
  5. The melted wax will move around and create a marbled look.
  6. When the wax is cooled and the pendant is cool, use a clear top coat, whether it be nail polish, mod podge, or whatever you choose, I simply use nail polish.
  7. Lastly hang it on a chain and you’re all set.

If you have kids who would like to do this activity, I suggest an adult do the shaving part.

How to Make a Goal Board

Like other people, I need something to help keep my motivation up. I have had a big problem with my depression keeping me from doing the things I want to do. So I decided, with the help of a friend, to make a goal board. You can do this however you want but I’m going to show you the one I made. Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos of my process, but its pretty easy to follow instructions.

So what I used for my board is a large white board, you can pick any size you choose, depending on the amount of goals you want to set each day. I have mine set up so I have 5 goals a day, 3 a week, and 3 a month. I also used multiple sharpies of different colors, dry erase markers, and a notepad (optional).

How I set mine up, is using a black sharpie and sectioning off days. I drew a line halfway through the board, long ways, then four lines long ways, cutting the last line at the middle line so that the bottom box is bigger than the rest. Check the picture, if that sounds confusing.

After you make your boxes, use the different color sharpies to label the boxes. I went online and found cute fonts to write the letters in. I only wrote the first letter, but you can write the full day if you like.

You can then use the sharpies to make little bullet points to check off.

I also used a planner to plan out my goals for the week and it has worked really well. I used the dry erase markers that have magnets on them so they could just hang on the board. The notepad I used was so I could write some positive things to boost myself up.

I hope this could help anyone who might need a little bit of a motivational boost. It has helped me a lot and it might help you.

How to Make a Bow

How to make a Bow

DIY day is starting off with a nice start for those who like hair accessories, or those who have young daughters that like to put adorable bows in their hair. These are three quick and easy Bow tutorials that you can make at home! For the bow you will need ribbon, thread, and a sewing needle. You also can use a hot glue gun and decorations of your choice (glitter, buttons, gemstones, pom poms, anything else).

This basic bow is a bow tie bow.

  1. I used a 2-inch wired ribbon by Celebrate it! that I got from Michael’s with a pink floral print. Make sure with each ribbon you string your tread before you start wrapping the ribbon.
  2. Cut the ribbon to the length you want, just remember the ribbon will be folded in half. I cut mine about 8 inches long.
  3. Fold the ribbon to make a circle with the ends overlapping.
  4. Hold the ends to the ribbons against the center of the ribbon so the loops are equal on both side. Take the needle and poke it through the very center of the ribbon.
  5. Wrap the thread around the top and underneath. Hold both loops of the ribbon and pull the tread until the center is squished together. Continue to wrap the thread around the center and tie it after a few wraps, make sure the thread it tight.
  6. This is when you have the option to wrap a small piece of ribbon around the center and make it like a bow tie.

What I did was make a second, smaller bow and hot glue it onto the big bow, then add a middle wrap. With the wrap, you can either sew it or hot glue it, I hot glued it because it’s quicker.

What you do with the bow now it up to you, add it to a head band, a clip, a barrette, anything you want. I hot glued it to a hair clip. You can also keep it plain or decorate it with some buttons or stickers. I kept it simple with the decoration and added some gemstones to the corners of the bow.

I hope this helped you get a fun and easy idea to make a cute bow tie!
